the-lively-cabaret-schedu The Lyceum Series Committee and the University Players at Elizabeth City State University will collaborate to present, "The Lively Cabaret," a music theatre production, at 8 p.m. October 4 through 6 in the auditorium of the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. Billicia Hines, ECSU's director of theatre, said the show will contain songs from musicals spanning from the 1920s to 2004, including selections from "The Color Purple," "The Wiz," "Hairspray," "Rent," "Smokey Joe's Cafe," "Ragtime," and other award-winning productions. Hines has been working with other staff and faculty members on the production. Kenneth J. Tate, auditorium director for ECSU, designed the set for the show. Local educator and Community Music School instructor Dennis Figgs serves as musical director. Dr. Walter Swan, director of the Concert Choir and an associate music professor, serves as singing coach. The cast will include about 18 student performers, while 10 students will serve in technical positions. Derek Graham, a senior majoring in music with a concentration in sound recording and minoring in theatre, is the sound designer. Graham also serves as the playwright for the majority of the speaking pieces in the show. Swan said it is a pleasure to collaborate with the theatre department for the production. It has been six years since the university hosted its last music production, "Ain't Misbehavin'." The cabaret will give students another opportunity to experience the thrill of performing live. It also will challenge Concert Choir members to perform on stage beyond their typical roles as vocalists. "This is also a great opportunity for our vocalists to learn to sing a range of music, not just classical, for which the Concert Choir is best known," Swan said. "Students must be familiar with a variety of music in order for them to become competitive in the job market," he said. "As a result, today's students are being prepared for graduate programs and professional stage productions where they must show a wide range of skills." Admission
