July 20, 2005 Each year, outstanding students from the Down East region of the state enroll at Elizabeth City State University to earn their baccalaureate degree. In recognition of their academic accomplishments, the university awards these students with the University of North Carolina Campus Scholarship. This year three students who graduated from Nash Central High School will receive that scholarship: Amanda Brake, Daleisha Joyner, and Rosalyn Bailey will start this fall as freshmen. Eligible freshmen must have graduated from a high school in North Carolina, graduated with a minimum 2.5 grade point average and no less than 800 on the SAT. They are required to complete a Federal Student Aid application, earn 15 semester credit hours each semester and agree to participate in the university's academic improvement effort and the First Year Experience. These freshmen must exhibit high moral and ethical standards for this renewable scholarship which is valued at $3,800 per academic year. Each of these recipients graduated with higher than a 3.0 grade point average. As part of Elizabeth City State University's educational partnership with the Down East Region, the ECSU Office of Admissions actively recruits talented students. This educational partnership has continued to evolve since the City of Rocky Mount and ECSU annually co-host the Down East Viking Football Classic. This year the event will be held at 6 p.m., September 24, at the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex. The ECSU Vikings will challenge the Saint Augustine's College Falcons. The Down East Viking Football Classic is in its seventh year and draws over 8,000 fans to the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex. Fans enjoy a series of related events as well as assorted food and goods from vendors. For more information about the Down East Viking Football Classic and the scholarship program, contact the ECSU Athletics Department, 252-335-3388, or the City of Rocky Mount at 252-972-1332. # # #
