office-of-sponsored-progr Elizabeth City State University's Office of Sponsored Programs and Grants recently recognized faculty and staff for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the quality of education at ECSU. The theme for the 9th Biennial Symposium and Recognition Ceremony was "One Team. One Goal - Promoting student retention and academic success through faculty grant writing and research opportunities." The ceremony, held on Aug. 18, also featured guest speaker Dr. Anthony V. Junior, director of the Department of the Navy's Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) Program Office. Winners and their awards follow: Largest Number of Proposals Submitted Tie for first place: Dr. Anthony Emekalam, clinical assistant professor in the ECSU/UNC Pharmacy Partnership Program, and Dr. Linda Hayden, professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. Both submitted 11 proposals. Largest Number of Funded Proposals First place award: Dr. Linda Hayden, professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. Seven of her proposals were funded. Largest Dollar Amount Funded First place award: Dr. Abdou Maty Sene, associate program director for the African Studies Program, with funded grants totaling $7,366,400. Scholarly Awards winners The School of Arts and Humanities: Dr. Shahid M. Shahidullah, professor and chairperson of the Criminal Justice Department. The Walter R. Davis School of Business and Economics: Dr. Joy T. Smith, professor of management and marketing. The Helen Marshall Caldwell School of Education and Psychology: Dr. Natasha Spellman, assistant professor in the Education Department. The School of Mathematics, Science and Technology: Dr. Farrah Chandler, chairperson of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. The Director's Award: Dr. Akbar Eslami, professor in the Technology Department. The Vice Chancellor's Award: The School of Mathematics, Science and Technology. The Chancellor's Award Winner: Morris A. Autry, director of the ECSU Community Development Program. Autry received a trophy and $1,000. First Runner-Up: Dr. Anthony Emekalam, a clinical assistant professor in the ECSU/UNC Pharmacy Partnership program. Emekalam won an award and $500. As director of the Navy's HBCU/MI Program Office, Dr. Junior, the award's program speaker, is responsible for encouraging, developing, implementing, managing, evaluating and reporting on activities and programs that strengthen and support the capabilities of HBCU/MIs to participate in naval science and technology research programs, education programs and contracting opportunities. Junior is the principal advisor to the chief of naval research, the director of the Navy's Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization Program, and the director of research and technical director of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) on issues related to HBCU/MIs. In addition, Junior manages the education, outreach and workforce development program portfolio for the ONR. In this capacity, Junior develops implements and manages programs and activities to enhance the quality and increase the quantity of U.S. scientists and engineers trained to pursue Department of Defense technical requirements. Junior served as deputy director of the ONR's Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization Program and as deputy director of the Systems Engineering Division at the ONR. He has also served as director of computer security, as a systems engineer and as a systems programmer at the ONR. Junior earned his Ph.D. in urban higher education administration from Jackson State University in Mississippi. He attended Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., and Strayer University in Arlington, Va., where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration. He also earned a professional certificate in finance for managers from the Harvard University Business School. Junior is a Department of Defense certified acquisition professional and an industry certified systems engineer/systems programmer.
