February 15, 2005founders-day-is-march-9-a Elizabeth City State University will celebrate Founders Day at 10 a.m. March 9 with an annual assembly in the Floyd L. Robinson Auditorium of the Fine Arts Complex. Former ECSU athletic director and head basketball Coach Robert "Bobby" L. Vaughan is the speaker. This Founders Day observance marks the university's 114th anniversary. Hugh Cale, a black representative from Pasquotank County, introduced a bill to the N. C. General Assembly in 1891 that launched the college. ECSU began as an institution that would train black teachers who would work in the state's common schools. Over the decades, the institution changed its name three times and became one of the state's most culturally diverse, public universities. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and university supporters will reflect on that history during the assembly. The assembly is open to the public.
