It's easier than ever for students at Elizabeth City State University to be clean and green. The campus laundry rooms have been upgraded with the most energy-efficient washers and dryers, both Energy Star® and CEE Tier 3 rated, to lessen the unavoidable laundry-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To further elevate this commitment to environmental sustainability, the rooms are now carbon neutral through participation in the nationwide Lighten the Load initiative. Recently, ECSU Chancellor Willie J. Gilchrist accepted a certificate of recognition for the university's participation in the program.

Through a partnership with Mac-Gray Campus Solutions and 100 percent of the GHG emissions derived from laundry equipment installed on campus, estimated to be over 770,000 pounds of CO2 (over a five year period), will be offset through an investment in third-party verified carbon reduction projects.

"We are proud to partner with Elizabeth City State University not only as their chosen laundry provider, but also in the important area of advancing environmental sustainability. The Lighten the Load initiative is one aspect of how we promote awareness and influence positive behavioral changes on campus and beyond, " said Kourtney Barnes, director of Sustainability Initiatives, at Mac-Gray. "Additionally, we educate students on the simple, yet effective methods of greening their laundry routine including choosing cold water cycles, using the proper dose of detergent and cleaning dryer lint screens to optimize air flow."
