Celebration of Women in Math brings 350 female students to campus

celebration-of-women-in-m The Celebration of Women in Mathematics was held on October 16, 2012 at Elizabeth City State University. This event is sponsored by the Center for the Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) and the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research (CERSER). Dr. Linda Hayden is the director of the Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research. This year, the Celebration of Women in Mathematics received support from Goddard Space Flight Center and Langley Research Center of The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) along with The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Celebration of Women in Mathematics consists of a program of workshops, talks, and math competitions for middle/high school girls and their teachers. The purpose of the program is to encourage young women to continue their study of mathematics and to raise the level of mathematics competency in Northeastern North Carolina. ECSU welcomed 350 students from the following schools to attend the event:

  • Bertie STEM High
  • Bertie High
  • Camden High
  • Gates County High
  • Hertford Early College High
  • H. L. Trigg Community School
  • Plymouth High
  • Camden Middle
  • Central Middle
  • Elizabeth City Middle
  • Perquimans Middle
  • River Road Middle
The Math Sprint Competition consisted of a team of girls from each school completing problems under a time constraint. The teams were given points for correct answers and were penalized for no answer. Dr. Cheryl Lewis led this year's competition. The winners were announced during the closing lunch and the youths received trophies for their efforts. Students from Camden High School came in first place this year. Team members included Olivia Djoboulian, Robyn Brown, Rachel Yuan, Megan Griffin and Caroline Robinson.
